Ingredients:
- 1 cup yellow lentils (toor dal)
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 2 green chilies, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
- 1 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to taste)
- 1 teaspoon coriander powder
- Salt to taste
- Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
- 2 tablespoons ghee or oil
Instructions:
1. Rinse the lentils thoroughly and cook them with double the amount of water until soft. Set aside.
2. In a pan, heat ghee or oil. Add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, and asafoetida. Allow them to splutter.
3. Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
4. Stir in ginger-garlic paste and green chilies, cook for a minute.
5. Add chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and coriander powder. Cook until tomatoes are soft.
6. Pour the cooked lentils into the pan, mixing well with the masala.
7. Adjust the consistency by adding water if needed. Season with salt.
8. Simmer for 5-7 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
9. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
10. Serve hot with rice or roti, spreading the warmth of this homemade daal fry.
